GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Villanova’s Political Science Department was founded in 1963 and currently encompasses a diverse faculty of nineteen members who offer courses in American Government, Comparative Politics, International Relations and Political Philosophy. The faculty are actively involved in a wide range of research communities; they work on key issues that define our public debates; and they are committed to developing their students’ fullest potential.

 

91̽»¨University's Political Science Department's mission is to educate students to be informed and engaged citizens, researchers, and professionals; advance knowledge through rigorous scholarship and faculty research; and serve the community by providing expertise and engaging with societal challenges in local, national, and international contexts. Our academic offerings foster excellence in oral and written communication, and social science research methods, and provide the analytical skills needed for professional careers and global engagement. The department aligns with the University's Augustinian Catholic values of truth, unity, and love, promoting scholarly inquiry and intellectual curiosity within a dynamic learning community.   

Content Learning Objectives:

  • Describe and apply key concepts used to study political institutions, processes and actors.
  • Explain, evaluate and apply diverse theoretical, methodological and disciplinary approaches to the study of political phenomena.
  • Develop substantive knowledge to understand the functioning of political institutions, processes and actors across different geographic, historical and cultural contexts.

Skill Learning Objectives:

  • Develop theoretical and empirical foundations for analyzing political phenomena.
  • Exhibit competence in qualitative and quantitative methods. 
  • Develop effective critical thinking, reading and communication (written or oral) skills.

Value Learning Objectives:

  • Constructively engage with diverse perspectives derived from the variety of human experiences, as consistent with Villanova’s Augustinian mission and values.
